JESUITS (SJ)

In 1550 a group of men, under the leadership of Ignatius of Loyola, explained their aims to Pope Julius III. "Whoever desires to serve as a soldier of Christ beneath the banner of the cross in our Society, which we desire to be designated by the name of Jesus, and serve the Lord alone, and the Church, should after a solemn vow of chastity, poverty and obedience keep what follows in mind. He is a member of a Society founded chiefly for this purpose: to strive especially for the defence and propagation of the faith and for progress of souls in Christian life and doctrine, by means of public preaching, lectures and other ministration whatsoever of the word of God."

In South Africa we have decided to do this by:
     * serving the Church in training priests by working in seminaries
     * working with the young as university and school chaplains
     * working in parishes and prisons
     * helping the Archdiocese of Cape Town face Aids
     * giving retreats and helping people to pray
     * setting up and working with Christian Life Communities.
